Hi my name is Dija Henry and I'm an actress, writer and socially conscious filmmaker. I also have three children and have married for almost 15 years.
I'm here because I desperate want you to walk in your purpose and you must push past fear to do it. All the people who do amazing things had to learn this very skill I'm going to teach you about.
"Run towards the roar" is an old African proverb used to keep the young ones safe. The pride would send the oldest and weakest lion out from the group to wait in the grasses across from the pride. This lion might have a mighty roar but most of his teeth are missing. As the animals hear the roar they are struck with fear and run away from the roar right into the hungry pride of lions.
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (ASV)
The devil wants to get you distracted from your dreams
He can't take you down to hell but he can try to stop you from shining bright like a diamond and bringing others into the Kingdom.
I'm going to show you tough love. I have a teenager now and I've learned that I've had to toughen up to help her be stronger and more able to face challenges.
When you walk out of here you're going to be different. Stronger more knowledgeable and that means the challenges might get tougher but you've got to have your mind ready. And that's what I'm here for.
A word about purpose:
God will use everything that you are learning in your life. Whether it's failures or successes - God will use everything. Skills talents and gifts he's given you. It doesn't matter what you do. You can do your purpose doing a number of things. And that's okay as we go through life our vocation may change but your purpose is always steady and related to your gifts.
Identify the roar
A few years ago I went through something called the fear interview. In this interview I was told I was going to be asked several questions and I had to answer NOT as myself but as fear.
It wasn't until I was asked this question that I was able to separate my voice from the voice of fear.
He asked me: What would Dija do if she didn't listen to you? or What would stop Dija if she didn't listen to you?
I answered: She would do every thing God asked her to do. Nothing would stop her.
In that moment everything changed!
What does it mean to Run towards the roar?
- Sometimes running towards the roar means
- having the courage to stand up for what you believe in
- forgive someone
- or love the unlovable
Move forward not in your own strength but in His. He will sustain you. Always fight with the full armor of God because you will have to fight.
On the other side of the fear s what you've been praying for. On the other side is the person you've always known yourself to be.
What is the roar in our lives?
For me the sound of the roar was when I found out I had MS.
I wanted to run back into life like before. I didn't want to accept it and move forward after the diagnosis. I wanted to go backwards. I wanted my old job back and I wanted my old life back.
By not accepting it the lioness would have got me with depression, watching my dreams fade, and my kids not having an active mother.
One morning I woke up like I always did, looked out the window like I always did, thanked God for waking me up like I always did and went to the rest room like I always did. I started feeling weird and ended up almost passing out. I couldn't move my arms and legs for almost 30 minutes. I ended up going to the ER being sent home and then after my hearing started to go and the left side of my face stopped working I was sent into the hospital for 7 days of steroids and more tests. The discovered I had lesions all over my brain and spine.
A week later I had to go to LA. I had gained 20 lbs and I was scared. My husband wasn't going to be there with us and I didn't know how I was going to do it. But God brought be through. That weekend I fulfilled a childhood dream of walking the red carpet in LA with my closest friends for an award nominated film that I helped produced and performed in!
I would have missed that opportunity if I let the roar of MS stop me.
TAKE A BREAK
Write down one major goal you have in your life right now.
Write down three "roars" that have scared you so far into not moving forward.
So how do you run towards the roar?
1. Be sober - not drunk, not full of toxins. How do you get free of those toxins?
Worship - What happens when we worship?
The wall of Jericho fell when the people worshipped.
The Israelites crossed the Red sea because Moses lived a life of worship.
God made a way for Esther because she engaged in the worship through fasting.
Live a life where worship is constant.
Big things happen when we worship.
2. Let go
Let go of limiting beliefs and bad habits - I had to let go of what I used to think being an actress meant - going to LA.
Let of of the extra - toxic thoughts, toxic activities - take a media cleanse and get quiet
Let go of the how. -Letting go doesn't always mean letting go of something you want. It means letting go of the how.
Sometimes deadlines back fire and cause worry, depression, feelings of failure.
Set the date but hold it with an open hand. God can make it happen sooner or later but it's always right on time. Example of my two car accidents, house being shot up and having the money roll in just in time.
Proverbs 16:1-3 We may make our plans, but God has the last word. ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out.
3. Be alert or GET WOKE!
The devil is prowling around, that means looking to make due use of opportunities! You don't want to give the devil any opportunities to make due use of!
Your failsafe romans 8:28
Make sure you fail forward - you fail forward by making sure you stop and reflect and articulate that lesson.
Proverbs 24:16 for a righteous man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of disaster and collapse.
- Fear is a story you tell yourself. It's just an emotion at the end of the day
- Joy makes you smile and hug everyone even if that person is grumpy.
- Love made Jesus ask God to forgive his killers.
- Courage makes you think you're super woman.
Successful people don't have comfort zones they jump in and out of. They live on the edge of their comfort zone and keep pushing it further. (Lisa Nichols)
What if fear was an indicator you were moving in the right direction? What if the lion roared louder the closer you were getting to your goals? Have you ever experienced that?
I think a lot of women are afraid to shine bright like a diamond. Diamonds are only allowed to be our best friends. We're taught to be humble and not excited about who you are. Real humility is knowing who you are in Christ and not being ashamed of letting Him shine through you. Isn't it funny if we are feeling ourselves we can be afraid of being judged? But when you see other amazing women you're like she's fabulous! It doesn't have to look like Beyoncé fabulous. It can be mother Theresa fabulous. She was the Beyoncé of missionary work! She's a beast. I read her book.
Mother Theresa turned her nuns habit into a Sari. Unheard of at the time.
Rahab - Was bold in helping the Israelites and saved her family.
Ruth- she was bold and followed God leaving behind what a woman should have done at the time.
Esther risked her life and went in front of the King and stood up to Hamadan and saves her people.
I mean think of the woman with the alabaster box. She went against all propriety for her Lord and savior.
- Commit so you can embrace new faith and healing habits
- Commit to a spiritual practice of worship all the time
- Embrace that it will be hard and it's okay because it's part of the process.
- Do it afraid
Why should your run towards the roar?
Do it for everyone else. Do it for the people that are hurting and need the love of God in their lives. Every step you take towards your purpose inspires someone else around you
Have you ever wondered why the devil is likened to a lion and Jesus is called the Lion of Judah?
Rev 5:5 - Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."I
Isaiah 31:4 - God will defend his people like a lion over its' prey.
Amos 3:8 - The lion hath roared, who will not fear? The Lord God hath spoken who can but prophesy?
When the lioness goes out to hunt the lions stay with the cubs to protect them. When the lion is ready to protect his children - watch out now!
The devil is an imitator. He cannot destroy you unless you let him.
- I want to remind you that this lion is actually caged up. Christ already defeated sin and death. He already made you and me more than conquerors.
- You just have to walk it out
- You can do it. It's already part of who you are.
The first time I gave birth I was terrified. But God gave the child to me and somehow I knew how to do it. Trust that the Holy Spirit will help you give birth to your dreams.
TAKE A BREAK
- Write a thestory of what you want and believe your purpose is. You can go goal by goal if you're not sure of your purpose.
- Ask God to help you in the area of faith if you're struggling there. Ask him to make a way where you don't see one.
- Ask him to help you let go of your worry and fear. He tells us like a bajillion times not to worry, do not fear, I'll never leave you or forsake you. There are 365 fear nots in the bible.
- I think God must think this is really important that we get this through our heads.
What would you do if you weren't afraid? How would you live your life? What choices would you make? How much faith would you invite into your life?
I urge you to run towards the roar!
It was a joy to meet all of you! Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
